Small Employer Market

Depending on the state you live in a small employer may be one with 50 or less employees or one with 100 or less employees.

The process of selecting & purchasing group health insurance for small employers will not be significantly different than it has been in the past; however, there will be some differences.

Premiums

Certain things will no longer be a factor in determining premiums such as:

  • Health status of employees
  • Geographic location of employees
  • Industry of employer
  • Employer size

In addition, insurance carries will no longer be able to offer composite rates (ie average rates).  Instead the rates for each employee will be based on his/her age.

Benefits

Benefits will be restricted to 4 Metal Levels

Deductibles will be limited to no more than $2,000 for an individual or $4,000 for a family unless this cannot be achieved to meet the requirements of a particular metal level.  In other words, if a Bronze plan cannot be created with a $2,000 deductible, then a Bronze plan with a higher deductible is permissible.
