After January 1, 2014 health plans can no longer rate or deny coverage based on a person’s health status. In addition a health plan cannot deny a medical claim because it is a pre-existing condition.
If you have a lot of health problems, this is good news.
- You will not be declined coverage do to your health.
- You will not pay extra premiums due to your health. (Carriers can charge extra for smoking or tobacco use)
- Your claims will not be denied because you have a pre-existing condition.
Although this is a good thing for people with significant health problems, this will tend to increase the overall cost of health insurance coverage.
