The first open enrollment period for individual health insurance both on and off of the Federal Marketplace is now over. The next open enrollment period will begin in the fall on November 15 and run through February 15 of 2015.
Generally people cannot purchase or change their health plans until the next open enrollment period begins. There are some exceptions to this if you you have a qualifying life event. This will qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period. These events include:
Loss of other health coverage which can include loss of job based coverage, COBRA expiration, aging off of parent’s plan, loss of eligibility for Medicaid or a CHIP program. The renewal of an individual health plan during the year can also qualify.
Marriage or divorce
Having a baby or adopting a child.
A change of residence (to a new region), gaining citizenship, leaving incarceration.
Gaining status as a member of a federally recognized Indian Tribe. (Members of a recognized tribe can enroll or change plans once per month).
